OCONEE CO., SC (WSPA) – A school resource officer with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office was fired after being named as a suspect in a criminal sexual conduct investigation.
Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said he was contacted last Thursday by the Department of Homeland Security regarding the investigation, which had been ongoing for several months.
Crenshaw said the investigation included John Towery, who was working as a school resource officer at Fair-Oak Elementary School.
According to the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, the DHS has an “open investigation for criminal sexual conduct with a minor less than 16 years of age out of Anderson County” involving Towery. The Department of Homeland Security plans to charge Towery with CSC with a minor, but no charges have been filed at this time.
The sheriff said Towery’s employment was terminated last Thursday when the DHS alerted the sheriff’s office about the investigation.
